October | IAMR4 in New York

BAYAN PNW sent five delegates to the 4th International Assembly of Migrants and Refugees (IAMR4) which took place in New York City from October 1-5, 2013. IAMR has gathered since 2008 to mobilize in response Global Forum of Migration and Development, which is convened by the United Nations to discuss neoliberal policies that promote forced migration as a solution to poverty in underdeveloped countries. This assembly highlights the resistance of migrants to issues they face daily such as criminalization, family separation, discrimination, wage theft, labor exploitation, deportation and detention. Joined by delegates from 103 organizations in 18 countries, our representatives participated in the conference and several mobilizations ranging from a vigil with faith communities, a flash mob at Washington Square Park, a march and rally from Times Square to the United Nation Headquarters, and a march across Brooklyn Bridge in support of genuine immigration reform.
