According to the United Nations, one in three women will be raped or beaten in their lifetime, or about one billion. On February 14th, also known as “International End Violence Against Women’s Day” or “V-Day,” one billion people in 207 countries rose and danced in demand of an end to violence against women. As part of Gabriela-USA’s “I Vow to fight VAW” (Violence Against Women) Campaign, Pinay sa Seattle joined the One Billion Rising event in Westlake Center. Pinay — joined by members of Alay ng Kultura, Anakbayan Seattle, Filipino Youth Activities Drill Team, and Pi Nu Iota – participated in the same flashmob danced in the Philippines on that day.
Pinay later facilitated a community workshop about I-VOW, connecting state repression and US militarism to fostering an environment for accelerated occurrences of human trafficking and sexual assault.
On V-Day 2014, Pinay sa Seattle will participate again in One Billion Rising 2 – Rising for Justice with a new dance choreographed by Gabriela Philippines.
